How to Contact AO3

Archive of Our Own, commonly known as AO3, is operated as a project of the nonprofit Organization for Transformative Works, also known as the OTW. The correct contact method depends on whether you need technical assistance, want to report a possible policy violation, have a media enquiry or need help concerning donations or membership.

For the best chance of receiving a response, use the official Organization for Transformative Works contact form. Select the team that most closely matches your question. If you are uncertain which team to choose, select Communications so the message can be forwarded to the appropriate committee.

Privacy enquiries concerning AO3CN.org should be emailed to [email protected]

Technical Support and Feedback

Choose Support on the OTW contact form for questions involving:

  • Account-access difficulties
  • Missing notification or invitation emails
  • Error messages or broken pages
  • Problems publishing, editing or viewing works
  • Bookmarks, subscriptions, collections or challenges
  • Tags, filters and search features
  • Accessibility concerns
  • Unexpected website behaviour
  • General questions about using AO3

Support is provided by volunteers, so response times may vary. Include a clear description of the problem, the device and browser being used, and the exact wording of any error message. Do not include your password or authentication code.

Policy Questions and Abuse Reports

Choose Policy & Abuse when reporting a possible violation of the applicable Terms of Service or content policies. This may include:

  • Harassment or targeted abuse
  • Impersonation
  • Plagiarism or unauthorised copying
  • Commercial promotion or prohibited solicitation
  • Spam or automated comments
  • Privacy concerns involving personal information
  • Other suspected policy violations

Policy & Abuse is separate from technical Support. Browser errors, missing emails and ordinary account problems should be directed to Support instead.

Check AO3 Service Status

If AO3 is unavailable, slow or displaying temporary errors, check the official service-status channels before submitting a support request.

Official AO3 Social-Media Channels

AO3 on Bluesky

@archiveofourown.org on Bluesky publishes AO3 news, announcements and community information.

AO3 Status on Bluesky

@status.archiveofourown.org on Bluesky is intended primarily for alerts about website availability, downtime, slowness and temporary service problems.

AO3 on Tumblr

ao3org on Tumblr publishes AO3 announcements, general information, news and community updates.

Social-media accounts are useful for news and public updates, but they are not the best place to discuss private account details. Use the official contact form for individual assistance.

Contact the Organization for Transformative Works

The OTW Contact Us page provides several contact categories:

Communications

Use Communications for general enquiries, interview requests, academic questions, media enquiries or requests for an official statement. Communications can also redirect a message when you are unsure which committee should receive it.

Development and Membership

Choose Development and Membership for questions concerning donations, donation receipts, membership status or donor gifts.

Legal Advocacy

Choose Legal Advocacy for general information about legislation, court cases, copyright or other legal developments that may affect fans and fan communities. Legal Advocacy provides general information but does not provide personal legal representation or individual legal advice.

Systems

Choose Systems when the OTW website or one of its related services appears to be technically broken. Ordinary AO3 account and usage questions should still be directed to Support.

Volunteers and Recruiting

Questions about volunteering should be directed to the Volunteers and Recruiting Committee. Recruitment is not continuously open, and available roles may change throughout the year.

AO3 Software Development

AO3 is built using open-source software developed and maintained by OTW volunteers and contributors. Developers can review the project, inspect recent changes and learn about contributing through the OTW Archive project on GitHub.

Software-development discussions are not a replacement for user Support or Policy & Abuse reports. GitHub should be used for code-related participation rather than private account assistance.

Mailing Address

Organization for Transformative Works, Inc.
228 Park Avenue South, No. 18156
New York, NY 10003-1502
United States

This address is primarily published by the OTW for postal correspondence and mailed donations. It is not a telephone-support centre, and postal mail is generally not the fastest way to resolve an AO3 technical problem.

Is There an AO3 Customer-Service Phone Number?

AO3 and the OTW do not publish a general customer-service telephone number for account support. Users should submit questions through the official online contact form and choose the relevant team.

Is There a General AO3 Support Email Address?

A general public email address is not presented as the primary support method. The official contact form is preferred because it directs each request to the correct volunteer committee and collects the information needed to investigate the issue.

Information to Include in a Support Request

To help volunteers understand the problem, include:

  • A concise description of what happened
  • The approximate date and time of the problem
  • The device and operating system being used
  • The browser name and version
  • The exact text of any error message
  • Whether the problem occurs repeatedly
  • The troubleshooting steps already attempted
  • A screenshot with private information removed, when relevant

Never include your password, authentication code, complete payment information or other highly sensitive personal details.

Account and Security Safety

Protect your account:

  • Do not send your password through email or social media.
  • Do not provide authentication codes to another person.
  • Be cautious of unofficial accounts claiming to represent AO3 or the OTW.
  • Confirm official social-media accounts through the OTW account directory.
  • Use the official OTW contact form for private or account-specific questions.
